Each Year, an Auction with a Purpose...
"Summer Evening 2007,” Sunday, July 29th on the Dennis Village Green, marks the sixth year for the DCT auction. The event has grown with each passing year – with more attendees and donors participating in the festivities, enjoying the delicious food, partaking of “spirited beverages” and joining in the “spirited bidding” on the live and silent auction items.

What hasn’t changed in four the six years is the auction’s focus: raising money that allows the Trust to continue its land conservation and preservation efforts. In the past four years, the DCT auction proceeds have helped preserve major parcels in the Town of Dennis.

In East Dennis, a collaboration with the Town resulted in the purchase of 33+ acres at Crowe’s Pasture, further preserving our wonderful “wilderness “ of woodland habitat, dunes and beach.

In Dennisport, the Trust not only assisted the Town in protecting the 17-acre Seaview parcel but added a $75,000 pledge toward its commitment.  That parcel combined wildlife habitat, rolling terrain bordering a small stream and pond, and a new Nantucket Sound public beach area for the Town.

In West Dennis, along Bass River, the Dennis Conservation Trust spearheaded efforts that resulted in the Town of Dennis acquiring a key parcel of land with over 500 feet of water frontage. This will provide for public access to the water and water related uses in perpetuity. Once again proceeds from the DCT Auction will help offset the Trusts pledge of $500,000 toward this purchase since money is still needed to complete the Trust’s obligation for that pledge.

The Trust assisted in these major preservation efforts in various ways, including negotiating, fundraising, educating, etc. The Trust has been credited with bringing to the Town an amazing $6.5 million in the past four years in matching Federal and State grants for these projects, thanks to the Trust’s collaboration with Mark Robinson and the Compact of Cape Conservation Trusts.

In 2007, the Trust assisted in acquiring a conservation restriction in Prue woods, Dennis a 3 acre parcel abutting another 7 acres preserved forever. In addition, we have received

The current of lands owned by the Trust is nearly 475 acres; an additional 70 acres are protected by the Trust through conservation restrictions, bringing the total to an impressive 500 acres!

The Summer Evening auction event has evolved into a “not to be missed” evening that showcases the fine businesses, artists, and products and services of our area. The evening has proven to be a wonderful time, with great music, fabulous food, a spirited auction -- and an opportunity for the many guests to “celebrate Dennis." As one auction-goer noted, “There’s so much that’s great about the auction – seeing your friends and neighbors … the food … the wine … the music … and then of course, there’s the auction!” Summer Evening 2007 promises to be even more spectacular – with auctioneer extraordinaire Bob Eldred at the gavel, and fabulous live and silent items, ranging from fabulous get-away vacations, Red Sox tickets, hand-crafted furniture, artwork, and fabulous gift certificates.

So please, Save The Date! July 29th is fast approaching. Bring your circle of friends to participate and help make this year's event even more successful. We are a volunteer organization and welcome your help, suggestions, or interesting auction items. Contact Connie Mooers at (212) 774-3525 or by email at DCTAuction@comcast.net . Whether you volunteer or just join in the fun, your participation will help protect the future of Dennis. The hard work of the volunteers, the generosity of the bidders who attend the auction, and the donations from the Dennis business community and townspeople result in all of our five villages being made a little more special than they were the day before.
